Theraputty Activities
Theraputty is an excellent tool for hand strengthening and building fine motor skills. There are many different activities or exercises you can do with theraputty or you can simply use theraputty just like play dough to shape and create whatever you would like.
Below are a few activity ideas to get you started. The best way to do these activities is to demonstrate it to the child as you are explaining it and get them to copy you.

Warm up
If you warm up the Theraputty it will be easier to work with

  • Hold the Theraputty in both hands
  • Pull hands apart to stretch theraputty to about shoulder width
  • Gather Theraputty back into a ball
  • Squash together then stretch again
Hide and Seek
Play alone or race to see who can find the beads first

  • Roll the Theraputty into a sausage.
  • Use a pencil to poke 5-10 holes along the length of the sausage
  • Put a small bead in each hole (for an extra challenge click here)
  • Pinch each hole shut with thumb and pointer finger
  • Roll the sausage up like a snail
  • Squash the snail into a ball 
  • Make sure none of the beads are showing
  • Squash or stretch the Theraputty to find all the beads
Donut Stretch
Make a donut, then stretch it bigger

  • Grab a small chunk of Theraputty
  • Roll or stretch it into a sausage approx 10cm long
  • Bring the two ends together to make a donut
  • Place your thumb and one or more other fingers in the hole
  • Stretch your finger apart
Jellyfish
Make a jellyfish

  • Take a lump of Theraputty and squash it flat like a pancake
  • Pinch the edge with your thumb and index finger
  • Do this all the way around the circle
  • Place your thumb and index finger in one of the indents
  • Stretch it to form a tentacle
  • Continue around the circle pulling every second indent
One Handed
See if you can mold and shape the Theraputty with one hand

  • Hold the lump of Theraputty in your dominant hand
  • Try to form it into a smooth ball
  • Don't put it down on the table or use your other hand
  • Next try to squeeze it into a sausage shape then back to a ball
Pancake
Make it as flat as a pancake

  • Hold the lump of Theraputty in your dominant hand
  • Try to form it into a smooth ball
  • Don't put it down on the table or use your other hand
  • Next try to squeeze it into a sausage shape then back to a ball
Spaghetti
Stretch the Theraputty to make long thin spaghetti

  • Place the Theraputty in a lump on the table under non-dominant hand
  • Use thumb and index finger of dominant hand to pinch
  • Pinch a small piece of Theraputty
  • Stretch it across the table to make a piece of spaghetti
  • Let go and pinch the spaghetti where it joins to the larger lump 
  • Stretch some more across the table
  • Keep going until you have turned the whole lump into spaghetti
  • See if you can do it without breaking the spaghetti string.
